Post-tensioned Tendon Failure

N-J was contacted by an Owner with a problem with their post-tensioned parking structure. One of the post-tensioned reinforcing tendons had explosively failed and could be seen projecting from the surface of the concrete. N-J performed an analysis of the structure and determined that the original designer had provided sufficient extra capacity in the system that failure of one tendon did not cause the structure to become unsafe. (The structure still met building code strength requirements even without one of the tendons.)The owner thus had the option of performing less costly cosmetic repairs instead of expensive structural reinforcement.
